Jose de Sousa Saramago was born in Azinhaga, Portugal, a small village one hundred kilometers northeast of Lisbon, on 16 November
1922. He was a
Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1988
Nobel Prize in Literature. Saramago married Ilda Reis in 1944 and they had only one daughter. In 1986 met Spanish journalist Pilar del Rio and they married in 1988 and remained together until his death in 18 June
