Sigmund Freud was born in the Moravian town of Freiberg, in the Austria Empire, on 6 May
1856. He was
Austrian neurologist and the founder of
psychoanalysis, a clinical method of treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. He was born to Jewish parents, the first of eight children. Freud entered the University of Vienna at age 17. He graduated in 1881. Freud began smoking tobacco at age 24. He believed that smoking enhanced his capacity to work and that he could exercise self-control in moderating it. In February 1923, Freud detected a leukoplakia, a benign growth associated with heavy smoking, on his mouth. He died around midnight on 23 September
1939.
